Yoko - Biomorphic Futura EP

It’s time, Hypnovizion Fam, to enter the mind of Yoko. Her rapid ascent through the bass music scene is proof positive that if your music is packed with enough vision, intent, and raw skill – the sky is truly the limit. Known across her Denver stomping grounds as one of the hardest working artists in the bass music world, her music has only become more complex and more accessible as she’s pushed herself to consistently keep learning new tricks. It’s no surprise, then, that her first release with Hypnovizion translates as yet another creative peak for the supremely cracked wunderkind.
Kicking off with the cyberpunk-infused banger title track “Biomorphic Futura,” this EP straight away reads as a mission statement from Yoko: this is the incomparable sound she’s fine-tuned and perfected over the last few years. Existing in her own paradigm between 140, halftime, and glitchy bops, even the most discerning of music listeners can pick a Yoko track out of a barrel. “Biomorphic Futura” is a scintillating track that commands the listener to get ready to shake what your momma gave you for this particular Hypnovizion outing. Packed full of all her signature quirks and bits and bobbles, this tune is quintessential Yoko. If you needed to pick *one* song to show your friends what she sounds like, this would be a magnificent choice.
“Binary Mindscape” is where we really start to go in. One thing you’ll hear a lot being used to describe Yoko’s sound is ‘cyberpunk’ and that’s because it’s true: this is absolutely the music of the future. Anyone who’s seen movies like Akira, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Hackers, or even Tank Girl will be able to immediately pick out how perfectly her music would fit against the backdrop of a dystopian world. Not only do we get the soundtrack to that hypothetical universe, but Yoko conjures up what it would look like in vivid detail through her lens of sound. “Binary Mindscape” is a gorgeously glitched out pilgrimage through the darker, more visceral annals of Yoko’s sound. When you hear fans mention why Yoko would be an excellent addition to Tipper & Friends, this track exists as a flawless explanation in support of that argument.
Wrapping up the EP, Yoko takes us to the club for “Loco”. If there’s one thing that can be said about Miss Yoko, it’s that she can deploy a vocal sample like no other. Her crafty strategy of inserting her name into her music through spoken vocals is something she does impeccably 100% of the time. It harkens back to an era when super-producers like The Cataracs, JR Rotem and DJ Mustard would stamp a track with their names in the same fashion. “Loco” is that callback and girls, gays, and theys: it is a BOP. One listen to Yoko’s side project, Critical H!t, with her best friend Skinny Limbs and you’ll hear an innate desire to simply make you dance. This tune is perfectly in line with their work together and wraps up the Biomorphic Futura EP on a high and highly danceable note. Good luck sitting still for this floor filler, this is Saturday Night Yoko and she’s ready to party.
Yoko has unleashed yet another body of work that nudges bass music up another level. Biomorphic Futura is a peek into the future of all of this music we love so much through her ears and the results are brilliantly subversive. No one sounds like her and she sounds like no one else. If you need the perfect entryway to the intricate mind of Yoko, this Hypnovizion release is your one-way ticket into Yoko superfandom.
